Sahasra Chakkirala (published as C. Sahasra) is a composer whose music transforms stories, experiences, and ideas into immersive sonic landscapes. Embracing a distinctly polystylistic approach, her work moves fluidly between tonal and atonal languages, classical traditions and experimental practices, intimacy and scale.
Drawing inspiration from memory, literature, visual art, nature, and everyday life, she creates music that is expressive, exploratory, and deeply human. Each composition seeks its own voice, resulting in a body of work that is as diverse as the stories it tells.
Across works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestras, electronics, and everything in between, there is a simple desire to explore what music can become. Sometimes that means rich, colorful harmonies and long lyrical melodies. Other times it means bold rhythms, unusual sounds, experimentation, or ideas that sit comfortably outside traditional boundaries.
No single style defines the music found here. Tonal and atonal languages, familiar gestures and unexpected turns, moments of simplicity and moments of complexity all have a place. Each piece is allowed to find its own voice, its own character, and its own way of communicating.
Many of these works begin with a story, a memory, a place, a question, or simply a feeling that refuses to be ignored. From there, they grow into musical worlds shaped by curiosity, imagination, and a love for discovery. The hope is not only to create something to hear, but something to experience—music that invites listeners to wander, reflect, and find their own meaning within it.
So whether you're here for a single piece or simply passing through, welcome. There is always another story waiting to be told.
Outside of composing, Sahasra spends a great deal of time reading, researching, and thinking about music. From music history and contemporary composition to the lives of composers and the stories behind great works, her interests often find their way into writing. This collection of articles brings together thoughts, observations, and research inspired by the music that has stayed with her over the years.
